Frameless vs Face Frame Cabinets
One decision, made before you cut anything, changes your drawer widths, your hinge order, your install day and the look of the finished run. Here is what actually differs between the two, with the arithmetic done rather than argued.
Frameless and face frame at a glance
A face frame cabinet wears a solid wood frame across the front of the box; a frameless cabinet does not, and its doors mount straight to the edges of the sides. That single difference decides how wide your drawers can be, which hinges fit, how forgiving the install is, and how the run reads when it is done. Neither is better. They are two different answers to the same problem, and they suit different kitchens, different shops and different walls.

What the two words describe
Both cabinets start life as the same object: a five-sided plywood or melamine box with a back. The argument is only ever about what happens at the front edge of that box.
A face frame cabinet gets a flat wooden frame glued and fastened across the front. The vertical members are stiles, the horizontal ones are rails, and a wide cabinet usually gets a centre stile between two doors. The frame is normally 3/4 in solid stock, and the stiles run somewhere between 1 1/4 in and 2 in wide depending on the shop and the door style. This is the North American tradition, and it is what most factory kitchen cabinets sold in the United States still are.
A frameless cabinet skips the frame. The doors mount to the front edges of the box sides, and the edges themselves are what you see between the fronts. You will hear it called European, Euro-box or full-access, and all four words mean the same construction. It became the standard in Europe in the middle of the last century and arrived in North America as an import, which is why the trade still calls it European even when it is built two towns over.
Plain-words keyStile is the vertical member of a face frame. Rail is a horizontal one. Carcass is the box itself, without fronts. Clear opening is the hole you can actually put something through, which is not the same as the cabinet width.
Frameless is also the platform that most modern flat-front kitchens are built on, including a Gola or handleless kitchen, where there is no handle to break up the field of fronts. And it is almost always laid out on the 32mm system, the hole grid that makes hinges and slides interchangeable. Those are related choices, not the same one: 32mm is a layout method, frameless is a construction.
What it costs you inside the box
The claim you will read everywhere is that frameless gives you about 15 percent more space. Treat that as a sales figure. The honest version takes ten seconds with a pencil, and it is a smaller number than 15 percent on a normal kitchen cabinet.
Start with a 24 in wide base cabinet built from 3/4 in sheet goods. Frameless, the interior is 24 minus two sides, so 22 1/2 in of clear opening. Now put a face frame on the same box with 1 1/2 in stiles set flush to the outside. Three-quarters of each stile sits over the side, and the other 3/4 in hangs into the opening. Clear opening: 21 in.
So the frameless box wins by 1 1/2 in, or about 7 percent, on a cabinet that size. Where it starts to matter is at the ends of the range. On a 12 in cabinet the same 1 1/2 in is a 14 percent cut, and on a 36 in cabinet it is under 5 percent. If a shop runs 2 in stiles, the loss climbs to 2 1/2 in. If it runs a 1 1/4 in stile on a 1/2 in side, the loss shrinks. This is why "how much more space" has no single answer: it depends on the stile and the cabinet, and anyone quoting one percentage for all cabinets is quoting a brochure.
The number that follows people around the shop is the drawer box. A side-mount slide wants about 1/2 in of air per side, so the frameless 22 1/2 in opening takes a 21 1/2 in drawer box and the framed 21 in opening takes a 20 in one. That is a real 1 1/2 in of usable drawer, every drawer, all the way up the stack. Over a bank of four it is the difference between fitting a sheet pan flat and not.
The other thing the frame takes is straight-line access. A wide framed cabinet usually needs a centre stile between its two doors, and that post sits right where you want to slide a roasting tray through. Frameless does not need one, which is why full-access is a fair name for it.
What changes on the fronts
On a face frame cabinet the door has a frame to sit against, so you get three real choices about how much of that frame to cover: partial overlay, full overlay, or inset, where the door sits inside the frame flush with it. That choice is a big part of what makes a framed kitchen look traditional or transitional, and it is a decision you make on purpose.
On a frameless cabinet there is nothing to cover. The doors sit over the box edges with a small even gap between them, usually somewhere around 3 mm, and the look is a continuous field of fronts. You still have to decide the gap, but you are choosing a reveal, not an overlay style. If that distinction is not clear yet, the overlay and reveal guide works through both cases with the numbers.
The visual consequence is worth being blunt about, because it is what most people are actually deciding between. Framed cabinets with partial overlay show wood between every door, which reads as furniture. Frameless reads as a wall of fronts with fine lines between them, which reads as modern. Full-overlay framed sits in the middle, and from three feet away a lot of people cannot tell it from frameless. If the look is what you are choosing, look at finished runs before you read another spec sheet.
Hinges, slides and the parts bill
The hardware differences are the ones that bite when the boxes are already built and the wrong parts turn up.
Hinges. Both constructions can use a European cup hinge with a 35 mm cup bored in the door. What changes is the mounting plate. A frameless cabinet uses a plate that screws to the flat inside face of the side, usually onto the 32mm hole grid. A face frame cabinet needs either a purpose-made face frame plate that wraps or screws to the frame edge, or a traditional frame hinge. Order the wrong plate and the door will not reach its overlay, and no amount of adjustment fixes a plate that references the wrong surface. Slides. Frameless is the easy case: the slide screws to the flat inside face of the side and the drawer box is opening width minus the slide clearance. On a face frame the slide has to bridge from the inside face of the side out to the back of the stile, so you either buy a face frame slide with brackets or add rear sockets and a mounting block. This is a real cost line, not a detail. It is also the most common reason a first framed build takes longer than the maker expected.
Sheet goods. Frameless boxes want 3/4 in sides, because the side edge is both the visible front and the surface every hinge plate screws to. Framed boxes get away with 1/2 in sides more often, since the frame does the stiffening and covers the edges. That thinner stock is part of why framed casework can come out cheaper by the sheet, and it partly cancels against the solid wood you now have to buy for the frames.
Building it and hanging it
In the shop, frameless is the simpler build and the less forgiving one. There is no frame to make, so a frameless carcass is five rectangles and a back, and once you are on the 32mm grid the hole positions repeat from cabinet to cabinet. The catch is that everything you see is a machined edge. A blown-out cut on a side is on show, the edges have to be edgebanded cleanly, and a box that is out of square shows up in the door gaps because there is no frame in front to hide it.
A face frame adds a whole second operation: mill the stock, cut the rails and stiles, join them, glue the frame up flat, then attach and flush it to the box. That is more time and more machines. What you buy with it is a very forgiving front. The frame squares the box, gives you a surface to clamp cabinets to each other during install, and gives you solid wood you can scribe and plane to a wall that is out of plumb.
Watch thisOn an older house, install is where the choice really shows. Frameless boxes have to be shimmed level and square to each other or the gaps between doors will taper visibly along the run. A face frame lets you scribe the end stile to the wall and pull the frames tight to each other, and small errors disappear into the frame. If your walls are not straight, factor that in before you commit.
Two smaller things that catch people out. First, a frameless end panel is a finished panel, so you are buying a finished side or applying one, whereas a framed cabinet often gets a skin later. Second, a framed cabinet is easier to modify on site, because you can trim a stile. Trimming a frameless box means recutting the side and every hole in it.
Which one to build
Here is the recommendation, and it is a recommendation rather than a shrug.
Build frameless if you want a modern flat-front kitchen, if you want the largest drawers you can get out of a given wall, if you are working with a CNC or a line borer, if the space is tight enough that inches count, or if you are going handleless. It is also the better fit for a shop that wants repeatable parts, because the 32mm grid turns a cabinet into a kit.
Build face frame if the kitchen is traditional or transitional and you want inset or partial-overlay doors, if you are installing into an old house with walls that wander, if you are working mostly with solid wood and a table saw rather than sheet goods and a router, or if you are handing the job to an installer who has done framed work for twenty years and no frameless.
What should not decide it is the 15 percent claim, or a belief that one is inherently better made. Both make excellent cabinets. The failure modes are different, that is all: a bad frameless job shows tapering gaps, and a bad framed job shows a frame that is not flat.

That is 1 1/2 inches, about 7 percent, on a typical base cabinet, not the 15 percent often quoted. It matters most on narrow cabinets, where an inch and a half is a much bigger share of the opening.
Are frameless and European cabinets the same thing?
In everyday use, yes. Frameless, European, Euro-box and full-access all name the same construction. The 32mm system is the hole grid that most frameless cabinets are built on, so the two terms travel together, but they are not synonyms: 32mm is the layout method and frameless is the construction.
Which is harder to install?
Frameless, on an old wall. A face frame gives you a solid wood edge you can scribe, plane and shim against, and it hides a lot of sin. Frameless boxes have to be set level and square to each other or the reveals between the doors will read as a wedge, because there is nothing in front of the box to disguise them. On a new, straight wall the difference is small.
Is one stronger than the other?
They get their strength differently. A face frame stiffens the front of the box against racking, which is why thinner sides and backs are common on framed casework. Frameless boxes get the same stiffness from thicker sides, usually 3/4 inch sheet goods, a captured back, and joinery that holds the box square. Both make a strong cabinet. Neither one is strong by accident.
