The 32mm system at a glance
The 32mm system (also called System 32) is a shared hole grid drilled into cabinet side panels. Because every hinge plate, drawer slide and shelf pin references the same 32mm spacing, parts become modular and interchangeable, and machines can drill a whole panel in one pass. It is the backbone of frameless, European-style cabinets.

What the 32mm system actually is
Open any frameless cabinet and look at the inside face of a side panel. You will see one or two vertical columns of small, evenly spaced holes running top to bottom. That column is the 32mm system: a repeating grid where every hole sits exactly 32 millimetres from the next.
Nothing about the number is magic. The 32mm system grew up in Europe after the Second World War, when furniture makers were chasing efficiency. The spacing itself is a machine artifact: 32 mm was about the closest the drilling spindles on early line-boring machines could be placed side by side, given the gears available at the time. Once the machines, the tooling and the hardware were all built around that number, it became the shared language of the trade.
It helps to be clear about what the 32mm system is not. It is not a government or ISO standard. There is no ANSI, DIN or ISO document you can buy that defines it. It is a de facto convention, kept alive because hardware manufacturers all build to it, so a cabinetmaker can mix and match almost any hinge, drawer slide or shelf pin and still have the parts land on the same holes.

The hole grid, measured
The grid has just a few numbers, and once you know them a cabinet side panel stops looking mysterious. Holes run in vertical rows. Within a row, each hole is 32 mm from the next. The front row starts 37 mm in from the front edge of the panel, the industry-standard setback. That 37 mm is measured from the finished face, so if the front edge is banded, the mark on the bare panel sits 37 mm minus the tape thickness and the hole ends up where it belongs once the tape is on. If a panel has a second row toward the back, the distance between the two rows is itself a multiple of 32 mm, so that drawer slides, whose mounting holes are also spaced in 32 mm steps, register correctly.
A handful of other numbers round it out. The system holes themselves are 5 mm in diameter, drilled about 12 to 14 mm deep, which suits both shelf pins and the screws that hold hinge mounting plates and slides. Separate 8 mm holes are used for the construction dowels that join the box together. And because door and drawer front heights are also sized in 32 mm steps (minus a small reveal gap), the whole cabinet stays on the grid as it grows taller.
Frameless vs face frame
The 32mm system is the engine behind frameless construction, the style you may also hear called European, full-access or Euro-box. In a frameless cabinet there is no solid wood frame across the front of the box. The doors and drawer fronts mount almost flush to the edges, so the front of the run reads as a clean field of fronts. The opposite tradition, common in North America, is the face-frame cabinet: a solid frame of rails and stiles is fixed to the front of the box, and doors sit on or inside that frame.
Each approach has real trade-offs. A face frame squares the box and gives you an easy surface to scribe and adjust against a wall, which is why it has stayed popular for on-site work. Frameless gives you full access to the interior with no center stile in the way, and it tends to allow wider drawer boxes for the same cabinet width. You will often see frameless marketed as offering up to about 15 percent more usable interior space; treat that as a commonly repeated marketing figure, not a measured standard. The real, verifiable benefit is the unobstructed opening and the larger drawers, and the exact percentage depends heavily on how you compare the two.

Why the grid pays off
The payoff of the 32mm system is that it turns a cabinet into a kit of interchangeable parts. Three benefits do most of the work.
Hardware just fits. Because a European hinge plate, a drawer slide and a shelf pin all reference the same 32 mm spacing, you can swap brands or product lines without re-drilling. Blum, Hettich, Grass, Salice and Häfele hardware all land on the same grid, which is why a single boring jig can serve several brands at once.
Machines love it. A predictable grid is exactly what a line-boring machine or a CNC wants. It can drill a full row of holes in one pass instead of chasing custom hole positions per job, which cuts setup time and makes the results repeatable. A shop that standardizes on the grid spends less time measuring and more time building.
You do not need a factory. The grid scaled down to the small shop too. Festool's LR 32 system, for example, is a portable guide-rail jig that drills accurate 32 mm-spaced holes with a router, so an installer or a one-person shop gets the same interchangeability a big line does. Hinge boring itself uses a larger 35 mm cup, but the mounting holes stay on the 32 mm grid.
A quick note on Blum, since the brand often gets the credit. Blum, founded in 1952, publishes its own Process 32 method for laying out hinges and drawers on the grid, and it helped popularize the system worldwide. But Blum did not invent the 32 mm spacing itself, which predates the company's cabinet hardware and traces back to those early boring machines. Standard cabinet sizes
The grid sets the hole pattern, but a few whole-cabinet dimensions are just as standard, and they are worth knowing whether you are planning a kitchen or cutting one. The numbers below are the common North American reference points; kitchens vary, so measure your own space before you cut.
