The 32mm System: What the Row of Holes Is For
The 32mm system is a convention for where holes go in a cabinet side: a vertical line of holes spaced 32 millimetres apart, running the height of the panel. It is the reason a hinge plate, a drawer slide and a shelf pin from three different manufacturers all have somewhere to land.

What the word means
Look inside a modern frameless cabinet and the sides are drilled with a line of small holes, evenly spaced, front and back. That line is the system. Every fitting that goes into the cabinet is designed to reach it: the mounting plate for a hinge, the bracket for a drawer runner, the pin a shelf sits on.
The value is not in the holes themselves. It is that everybody agreed on the same spacing, so a component bought in one country in one decade lands correctly in a cabinet built somewhere else. Once the grid is a shared assumption, hardware becomes interchangeable and a shop stops laying out fittings one cabinet at a time.
Why the number is 32
It is a manufacturing number rather than a design one. Thirty-two millimetres is about the tightest spacing the industrial line boring machines of the era could drill reliably in a single pass, and once machines were built around it the figure stopped being negotiable. Everything downstream inherited it.
What follows from that is the useful part: cabinet dimensions in the system are multiples of 32 mm measured from a known starting point, so parts, panels and hardware stay in step with each other across a whole job rather than agreeing by accident.
The reference edge matters more than the hole count. Bore every panel from the same edge. Two panels drilled from opposite ends can both be perfectly spaced and still fail to line up across a run, and it is the kind of error that only appears when the shelves go in.
Where it shows up
If you build to the system, it is a decision about the whole job rather than about one cabinet, and it wants settling early alongside your material and your construction. It affects panel heights, hardware selection and how you bore, and it is what makes a shop's cabinets interchangeable with each other years apart.
