Two drawers & a tip-out over a Kohler Ladena sink

Where to set each drawer slide — as a plywood spacer-block height measured up from the cabinet interior floor — so the fronts line up across the vanity and the cabinet to its right, the middle drawer clears the sink bowl, and the box back clears the 2″ drain stub coming out of the wall behind it.

Three constraints folded in: ① the 2″ drain stub at 500 mm above the bathroom floor sits behind the vanity middle drawer → vanity middle runs an 18″ Salice; other four stay 21″. ② The 19 mm back nailer must sit at z = 100–250 mm on both cabinets — anywhere lower and it eats the depth the 21″ bottom slide needs. ③ Supplies enter the wall at 1050 mm (above the cabinet) and route through the countertop. Also: the RÄNNILEN kit ships with no overflow connector and no stopper, and the Ladena has an overflow — order the overflow kit and confirm local code.

Two options for the drawer slides

The vanity middle drawer is locked at 18″ — the 2″ drain stub forces it. The other four drawers (vanity bottom + right cab × 3) can all be 18″ or all be 21″. Use the toggle at the top of the page to switch the entire guide between the two options.

Option ANo nailer moves anywhere

18″ on every drawer

  • Both cabinets' nailers can stay where they are — 18″ slide needs only 475 mm depth, so the 19 mm nailer at the bottom (effective depth 544 mm) is no problem on either cabinet.
  • All five drawers use the same slide part (G5U6S457XXF6) — one SKU to order, simpler box prep.
  • Lose ~76 mm of depth on four drawers vs Option B (vanity bottom + right cab × 3).
  • Hardware: 5 × Salice 18″ G5U6S457XXF6.
  • Nailer work: none.
Option BMore depth, more nailer work

21″ on four drawers · 18″ on vanity middle (default)

  • Four drawers keep full 21″ depth — max storage on the vanity bottom and all three right-cab drawers.
  • Two slide parts to order — slightly more complex SKU management.
  • Both cabinets' nailers must move to z = 100–250 mm — out of the 21″ slide's z-zone.
  • Hardware: 4 × Salice 21″ G5U6S533XXF6 + 1 × Salice 18″ G5U6S457XXF6 (vanity middle).
  • Nailer work: relocate on both cabinets before mounting slides.

Cabinet dimensions: vanity interior 701 × 752 × 563 mm; right cabinet interior 431 × 752 × 563 mm (469 mm exterior — narrower than the vanity). Both share the same base height and countertop height. Drawer box outside widths differ: vanity ≈ 659 mm, right cab ≈ 389 mm.
The toggle at the top of the page rewrites the slide table, hardware section, build instructions, and nailer guidance to match whichever option you select. The middle drawer (18″) and the spacer-block heights (40 / 314 / 599 mm — three unique heights) are identical in both options. (Both middle drawers now sit at z = 314 so the drawer boxes line up across the vanity and the right cab. The right-cab top spacer was originally cut at 622 mm; bench measurement showed the top drawer hit the carcass top, so it was re-cut to 599 mm — 153 mm below the carcass top = 150 mm top front + 3 mm top reveal.)

Your question

Are the 21″ slides too deep for the middle drawer?

Cabinet depth and bowl clearance: yes, 21″ fits in the 563 mm bench-measured depth. But the 2″ drain stub at 500 mm above the bathroom floor lands right behind the middle drawer — so the vanity middle gets an 18″ Salice, pulling its box 76 mm forward of the back wall. The other four drawers stay on 21″. Sides-mount only; no rear sockets.

ClearsCabinet depth

The box has the depth for it

Per the Salice spec card (no rear socket), the 21″ G5U6S533XXF6 needs 551 mm; you have 563 mm → 12 mm spare. The 18″ G5U6S457XXF6 needs 475 mm → 88 mm spare.

ClearsDrain + trap fit under the bowl

The middle drawer passes under the sink — with room for the drain

The Ladena bowl bottoms out 546 mm above the interior floor. Middle slide at 314 mm puts box top at 494 mm52 mm under the bowl, enough for the 1½″ drain tailpiece + 90° elbow + RÄNNILEN trap body.

ConflictDrain stub vs. drawer back

21″ middle would hit the drain

With a 21″ slide, the middle box back sits only 30 mm off the back wall — not enough for the 2″ stub plus the RÄNNILEN trap, and the ±20 mm leg adjust widens the conflict zone. 18″ pulls the box back to 106 mm off the wall — comfortable.

Why not just notch the drawer back? You could — but the notch has to cover the full ±20 mm leg-adjust window, costs back-of-drawer storage, and complicates the box build. The 18″ slide is the cleaner trade: a shorter middle drawer is the one drawer that naturally lives with the sink anyway.

The answer

Your spacer-block heights

Each number is the height from the cabinet interior floor to the bottom of the Salice runner — i.e. the plywood strip you rest the slide on. You only cut three unique heights.

40 mm
both bottom drawers (your "small block")
314 mm
both middle drawers (vanity + right cab) — matches across so drawer boxes line up
599 mm
right-cabinet top drawer only (was 622, bench-corrected)

All three middle drawers now use the same z=314 spacer block, so the drawer boxes line up across the vanity and the right cab.

Spacer-block heights are option-independent. The three unique heights (40, 314, 599) come from the front layout + plumbing constraint — they don't change between Option A and Option B. Only the slide depth and box length vary with the option. The vanity middle is dropped ~34 mm below the bottom-drawer pitch (would have been 348) so the 1½″ drain pipe + RÄNNILEN trap body fit between the bowl bottom and the box top. The right-cab middle now matches the vanity middle at z=314 (down from 348) so the drawer boxes line up across the two cabinets — same spacer block in both. The drawer front still lands on the same reveal line — the box just sits ~100 mm below the front top instead of ~60 mm (the Salice front clip and a small filler rail handle the extra offset). The right-cab top spacer was originally 622 mm — bench measurement showed that put the slide only 130 mm under the carcass top, so the 105 mm-tall box hit the cabinet top. Correct value is 599 mm (slide sits 172 mm under carcass top; box top lands at z=704 interior, 67 mm of clearance under the carcass top).
Side-reveal scheme (drawer-front widths). Outer reveals at the vanity LEFT edge and the right-cab RIGHT edge are 3 mm each. The seam BETWEEN the two cabinets is also 3 mm total, split 1.5 mm vanity-right + 1.5 mm right-cab-left so the reveal carries straight across both cabinets at the same width. Drawer-FRONT widths: vanity 734.5 mm (739 − 3 − 1.5) · right cab 464.5 mm (469 − 1.5 − 3). Drawer-BOX outside widths are unchanged (Salice OSW: vanity 691 · right cab 421) — the front overhangs the box on each side, and the Salice clip's ±3 mm horizontal adjust dials the reveal in.

Heights are to the bottom of the runner. Confirm your hardware's own runner-bottom-to-box-bottom offset on one dry-fit and shim the block by that couple mm if needed; then use the Salice ±6 mm clip adjustment to bring each front onto the reveal line.

Why it works

The middle drawer clears the bowl & the drain

The Ladena hangs 206 mm below the countertop. With a 150 mm tip-out, the bowl drops ~52 mm into the middle-drawer band — so the middle box is set low enough that its top passes underneath. The 18″ slide pulls its back forward so it also misses the 2″ drain stub coming out of the wall.

The middle box clears the bowl (~10 mm) AND clears the RÄNNILEN trap (~56 mm air gap) across the full ±20 mm leg-adjust window. The trap depth (~50 mm proud of the wall) is a planning estimate — confirm on dry-fit. If the actual trap is thicker than expected and the 18″ ends up tight, drop the middle drawer to a 15″ G5U6S381XXF6 Salice — that pulls the box back to 182 mm forward of the wall (122 mm air gap to the trap). 15″ is the safe fallback; 18″ is the recommended starting point since it preserves more drawer depth.

The 52 mm is a planning minimum based on the 1½″ drain pipe + RÄNNILEN trap geometry. If the dry-fit shows the actual trap takes more vertical space, drop the middle slide a bit further — every mm the slide drops adds a mm of bowl clearance and loses a mm of opening height on the middle drawer. The current 314 mm is a balanced starting point.

Plumbing, legs & nailer

Two datums — bathroom floor and cabinet interior floor — plus the back-wall obstacle

The build math uses the cabinet interior floor as zero. The plumbing math lives in bathroom-floor coordinates. They're linked by the Hafele Axilo leg height — and the legs are field-adjustable by ±20 mm, which moves the drain stub by the same amount in cabinet coords. The 19 mm back nailer eats 19 mm of depth wherever it sits, so it has to live in a band that doesn't overlap any slide.

SolvedDrain stub

The 2″ stub fits behind the 18″ middle drawer

With the 18″ slide, the box back sits 106 mm forward of the back wall (563 − 457). The 2″ stub (~30 mm proud) plus the RÄNNILEN trap body (~40–50 mm, designed flat-to-back) need ~80 mm. Comfortable across the full ±20 mm leg-adjust window.

Out of the waySupplies

Hot/cold enter above the cabinet

The supply stops at 1050 mm above the bathroom floor are above the 875 mm cabinet top. They drop through the countertop to the faucet — they never enter the drawer envelope. No notching needed on any drawer for supplies.

RelocateBack nailer

Move the 19 mm nailer to z = 100–250 mm Option B

At the bottom slide's z = 40–80, a 19 mm nailer eats depth → effective 544 mm. 21″ needs 551 → fails by 7 mm. Move the nailer above the bottom slide (top edge z ≈ 80) and well below the vanity middle slide (z = 314 — 19 mm-tall nailer at z = 100–250 leaves comfortable margin on both ends). Same fix on both cabinets.

No moveBack nailer

Nailers stay where they are Option A

18″ slides need only 475 mm of depth — well under the 544 mm effective depth with the 19 mm nailer in place. Both cabinets keep their nailers in the current low position. No relocation work.

Pre-install order (Option B): ① relocate the nailer on both cabinets, ② lock the Hafele Axilo legs to give a known top-of-cabinet height (current measurement: 875 mm above the bathroom floor), ③ then mount the slides. Any later leg adjust shifts the drain stub by the same amount in cabinet coords — the 106 mm clearance behind the middle drawer absorbs that within the ±20 mm window, but lock the setting in case you ever pull the cabinet for service.
Pre-install order (Option A): ① lock the Hafele Axilo legs at the chosen height (current: 875 mm), ② mount the 18″ slides. No nailer work. Any later leg adjust shifts the drain stub by the same amount in cabinet coords — the larger clearance behind the 18″ middle drawer absorbs the ±20 mm window comfortably.

Option A — no nailer placement table needed. All slides are 18″, which only need 475 mm of cabinet depth. The 19 mm nailer (eating 19 mm of depth wherever it sits) leaves 544 mm at any slide z-zone — plenty for any 18″ slide. The nailer can sit anywhere on either cabinet.

Lining up

Fronts run in a continuous line across both cabinets

The two big drawer bands are identical on both cabinets, so every reveal line carries straight across. The right cabinet just swaps the vanity's tip-out for a shallow 105 mm-box top drawer behind a matching 150 mm front.

Front sizes: tip-out / top band 150 mm, each drawer front 304.5 mm. Side reveals: 3 mm at each outer edge (vanity LEFT, right-cab RIGHT) and 3 mm total at the seam between cabinets, split 1.5 mm + 1.5 mm. That gives front widths of 734.5 mm (vanity) and 464.5 mm (right cab). The right cab is about 63% the width of the vanity (469 vs 739 mm exterior) but shares the same height and base, so every reveal line carries straight across. The fronts attach to the boxes and dial in with the Salice ±6 mm clip adjust, so the vanity-middle box can sit low (to clear the drain pipe) while its front still lands on the line.

Rear-hook hole — drill this, don't skip it

Every drawer back panel gets an 8 mm (5/16″) hole, 12 mm deep (10 mm absolute minimum), on the inside face, centered side-to-side, ~9.5 mm above the inside top of the bottom panel. The Salice rear hook passes UP through the 50 mm notch in the bottom panel and engages this hole — that's what pulls the box rearward against the slide's rear stop.

Failure mode if too shallow or missing: the box won't seat fully and sits proud of the cabinet face by several mm — even when the slide setback (4 mm) and box length are perfectly in spec. Bench-confirmed: drilling the hole to spec fixed a 3 mm protrusion instantly.

Drill it BEFORE assembling the back panel into the box — much easier on the bench than reaching inside a glued-up drawer. 9.5 mm above the bottom-panel inside floor matches the "9.5" dim on the Salice spec card.

×240 mmvanity bottom + right-cab bottom

×1599 mmright-cab top (105 mm box) — bench-corrected from 622 (gave box 23 mm more clearance to carcass top)

Three unique heights, five pieces total. Same blocks in Option A or B — the option only changes the slide depth, not the slide height.

Salice Progressa box prep

Box material 5/8″ (16 mm) hard maple sides / front / back. Bottoms are 12 mm plywood captured in 6 mm deep × 12 mm wide grooves cut into the sides and front only (no groove in the back panel). The back panel sits ON TOP of the bottom and is therefore shorter than the sides/front by 22 mm (groove bottom is 10 mm above the box bottom edge, matching the Salice ~9.5 mm drawer-bottom clearance). The bottom slides in from the rear after the U is assembled; its back edge is flush with the back face of the back panel. Cut a 50 mm × ~25 mm hook notch centered in the BACK EDGE of the BOTTOM panel (not the back panel) for the Salice rear hook — the hook then passes UP through that notch and engages an 8 mm diameter × 12 mm deep hole drilled in the inside face of the back panel, centered side-to-side and 9.5 mm above the inside top of the bottom panel (see the Critical callout above — if this hole is too shallow or missing the box won't seat). Box outside width = inside cabinet width − 10 mm per the Salice Progressa+ spec card's calculation formula for 16 mm sides. Vanity → 691 mm OSW. Right cab → 421 mm OSW. Front + back fit BETWEEN the sides (so their width = OSW − 32 = 659 mm vanity / 389 mm right cab). Side-mount only — slides screw to the side panels, no rear sockets.

Box lengths (Option B): four 21″ drawers → 533 mm box / 542 mm runner (vanity bottom; right cab bottom, middle, top). One 18″ drawer → 457 mm box / 466 mm runner (vanity middle only). Box outside widths: vanity 691 mm, right cab 421 mm.

Box lengths (Option A): all five drawers → 457 mm box / 466 mm runner (one length, easy cut list). Box outside widths: vanity 691 mm (two drawers), right cab 421 mm (three drawers, including the 105 mm-tall top drawer).

Front-mounting note (both middle drawers): with the slide at z = 314 on both cabinets, the box top sits ~100 mm below the front top (vs the usual ~60 mm). Either use the Salice extended front bracket or add a small wooden filler rail across the top of the box back so the front mounts solidly. Standard ±6 mm clip adjust then dials in the reveal.

Setting the fronts

Heights are to the bottom of the runner = top of your spacer. Dry-fit one runner to check its own bottom-to-box-bottom offset and shim the block by that couple mm. Then use the ±6 mm vertical clip adjust to bring each front onto the 3 mm reveal line. The middle box sits ~60 mm below its front top — that's deliberate, to clear the bowl.

Pre-mount sequence:Relocate the back nailer on both cabinets to z = 100–250 mm — out of every slide's z-zone (Option B only — Option A skips this). ② Lock the Hafele Axilo legs at the chosen height (current: 875 mm cabinet top above bathroom floor) — any later leg adjust shifts the drain stub by the same amount in cabinet coords. ③ Confirm the 2″ drain stub's projection from the wall (≲ 50 mm assumed) so the 106 mm clearance behind the 18″ middle drawer is intact. ④ Dry-fit the RÄNNILEN trap at the back-top corner of the middle drawer envelope. ⑤ Confirm the 1050 mm supply stops drop through the countertop, not down through the cabinet back.
Drawer-box pre-assembly sequence: ① Cut all panels per the cut list below. ② Drill the 8 mm × 12 mm-deep rear-hook hole in each back panel BEFORE the box is glued up — inside face, centered side-to-side, 9.5 mm above the inside top of the bottom panel. Drilling after assembly means reaching inside the box with an angled drill — slow, awkward, and easy to wander. ③ Cut the 50 mm × ~25 mm hook notch in the back edge of each bottom panel. ④ Glue up the U (sides + front + bottom captured in the front/side grooves), then drop the back panel on top of the bottom and fasten. ⑤ Hang the box on its slides and confirm the rear hook fully engages and the box face sits flush — if it stands proud, the hole is too shallow.

Bottoms are 12 mm plywood captured in 6 mm × 6 mm grooves on the sides and front only — the back panel is shorter (sits on top of the bottom; bottom slides in from the rear after assembly). The 50 mm hook notch is centered in the BACK EDGE of the BOTTOM panel, not the back panel.

Option A totals: 10 maple sides + 5 maple fronts + 5 maple backs + 5 plywood bottoms = 25 pieces across 5 drawer boxes (all 18″). One box length (457 mm) across the whole run — simplest joinery setup. Two box heights in play: 180 (four boxes — both bottoms + both middles, all sharing one side-stock rip) · 105 (right-cab top).

Box-width math (per the Salice Progressa+ spec card): the spec card's "Calculation Formula for Outside Drawer Width" table says for 16 mm (5/8″) drawer sides, deduct 10 mm from the inside cabinet width to get the drawer OSW. So: vanity interior 701 → OSW = 691 mm; right cab interior 431 → OSW = 421 mm.

Front / back width math (5/8″ sides, fronts + backs sit BETWEEN the sides): front and back width = OSW − 2 × 16 mm = OSW − 32. Vanity → 659 mm. Right cab → 389 mm. (This also equals the "inside drawer width" the Salice spec card calls out: opening width − 42 mm — 42 mm = 10 mm Salice clearance + 2 × 16 mm sides. Both formulas give the same answer.)

New joinery (drawer bottoms): bottoms are 12 mm plywood captured in 6 mm × 6 mm grooves on the SIDES and FRONT only — NO groove in the back panel. Grooves are set 10 mm up from the bottom edge (matches the Salice ~9.5 mm drawer-bottom clearance). The back panel is shorter than the sides/front and sits on top of the bottom; the bottom slides in from the rear after the U is glued up, and its back edge is flush with the back face of the back panel.

Bottom-panel math: Bottom WIDTH = (OSW − 2 × 16) + 2 × 6 dado = OSW − 20. Vanity → 671 mm. Right cab → 401 mm. Bottom LENGTH = (L − 16 front − 0 back) + 6 front dado = L − 10 — the back panel adds no length penalty because the bottom extends past it to the back face. For 533 mm box → 523 mm; for 457 mm box → 447 mm.

Back-panel height: back panel HEIGHT = box H − 22 mm (10 mm groove-bottom offset + 12 mm bottom thickness). For 180-tall boxes (both bottoms + both middles — all four ride the same side stock) → back = 158 mm. For 105-tall (right-cab top) → back = 83 mm.

50 mm hook notch: Cut ~50 mm wide × ~25 mm deep into the BACK EDGE of the BOTTOM panel, centered. That's where the Salice rear hook engages. The back panel itself is uncut — the notch lives in the ply bottom only.

Material reminder: Salice G5U6 family is rated for 1/2″–5/8″ box material — 5/8″ hard maple is at the upper end of that range, well within spec. The maple is heavier than ply but holds dovetails / box joints beautifully and resists deflection at the longer 21″ drawers. The 12 mm ply bottom stiffens the box meaningfully vs the older 6 mm bottom.
