Changing your email address or password
Both live on your account page, in cards of their own. Neither one touches your projects.
Applies to every module. See all the guides.
Changing the email you sign in with
- Open your account page
from your name or picture in the top bar.
- Find the card called Change email
and type the new address into the box.
- Press "Send confirmation link".
Now check both mailboxes.
Two links go out, one to the address you use today and one to the new address, and your sign-in email changes only after both have been clicked. It is one extra step, and it buys you something worth having: mistype the new address and nothing happens, so a slip of the finger cannot lock you out of your own account.
Until both links are clicked, keep signing in with your old address. Nothing else about the account changes, and your work is untouched either way.
Setting a new password
- Open the card called Change password.
It sits just below Change email.
- Type the new password twice.
Eight characters is the shortest we accept. Longer is better, and a password manager is better still.
- Press "Update password".
Leave the code box empty on the first try.
The six-digit code, and when you will be asked for it
If this browser has been signed in since yesterday or earlier, we ask for a short code from your email before letting the password change. If you signed in a few minutes ago, we do not: you have already proved who you are.
When you are asked, press Email me a code on the same card. A six-digit code arrives at the address on your account within a minute or so. Type it into the box marked "Code from your email" and press Update password again.
The reason for it is the open laptop. A password on its own is not much of a lock when the browser is already signed in and the room is not empty, so an old session has to prove it can also read your email.
If you sign in with Google
There is no CabDesign password on your account to change, so the card tells you that instead of showing you fields that would do nothing. Your sign-in follows your Google account, and the place to change it is your Google Account security settings. Everything else on your account page works the same way it does for anyone else.
Adding a second step to your sign-in
Below the password card there is one called Two-step sign-in. It asks for a six-digit code from your phone after your password, which is the difference between somebody knowing your password and somebody getting into your account. It is optional, it is available whether you sign in with a password or with Google, and nothing about signing in changes until you turn it on.
If you cannot get in at all
These cards live behind the sign-in, so they are no help when the sign-in itself is the problem. Start with the troubleshooting guide, which covers a sign-in link that never arrived, a password that will not take, and being signed out because you signed in somewhere else.
